With the NFL preseason on the horizon, one look at the Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster presents quite a few questions. Multiple positions have seen turnover this offseason, with new faces taking over.
In the running back room, second-year back Bhayshul Tuten is set for an increased workload this season. Tuten is expected to have a big year, and a few key indicators make these aspirations seem very possible.
Etienne’s Departure Leaves the Backfield Wide Open
The departure of Travis Etienne to the New Orleans Saints opens a massive opportunity for Tuten and the rest of the backs. Etienne accounted for 70% of the carries last season as the clear lead back.
Tuten got most of the remaining touches and recorded just under 400 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns. He also returned kicks due to his blazing speed.
Considering the only notable addition to the RB room was Chris Rodriguez Jr, a rotational back in Washington last season, Tuten should see the bulk of the carries this season.
Right now, Tuten and Rodriguez have been rotating. However, Rodriguez is still recovering from a foot injury. That gives Tuten a chance to separate himself from the pack. LeQuint Allen Jr. has been serving as the third-down back due to his strengths in pass blocking.
Liam Coen Is Betting on Tuten’s Breakout
Tuten also seems to have the support he needs from the coaching staff.
Most notably, head coach Liam Coen has expressed high hopes for his second-year running back.
“He does a great job of finding the end zone and his yards after contact and rushing yards, man — when he can get going and get downhill, I mean, he was 4.28 coming out. So he can fly,” said Coen.
“Now it’s more so, he was so conscientious about ball security last year and doing right. Okay, now Tuten, you got it. You understand it more. Now just go be you. Go do what got you here. Go be special, that’s who you are. We’re definitely expecting Tuten to have a big year for us.”
Tuten Has Everything He Needs to Take Over
Coen has called the competition wide open, but the signs point toward Tuten eventually taking over.
Even if Tuten does not begin the season as a workhorse back, as long as he is consistent and displays his big-play ability, it’s very possible that he can separate himself from the pack as the season progresses.
Tuten’s opportunity is there for the taking in Jacksonville.
