In just three games, Caleb Downs is already showing fans and coaches why he was worth the hype.
Through the first three games of his rookie season, Downs has recorded 21 total tackles, one sack, and three forced fumbles.
Downs has already played 196 of 204 available defensive snaps. Only cornerback Daron Bland has played more snaps for the Cowboys this season.
That level of production and durability from a rookie is rare in the NFL.
He Gives Christian Parker Plenty to Work With
Christian Parker is having a field day with a player as versatile as Downs. We’ve seen him line up at nickel, safety and even in the box.
Having a player you can line up anywhere and trust to understand the assignment makes it much easier to confuse opposing offenses. Quarterbacks never know exactly where Downs will be before the snap.
Downs has displayed a high football IQ, strong play recognition and the ability to come downhill and make a tackle.
A high-level nickelback or safety can help a defense take the next step. Some of the league’s top defenses have versatile players in that role, including Devon Witherspoon in Seattle, Kyle Hamilton in Baltimore and Cooper DeJean in Philadelphia.
The nickelback is one of the most valuable positions on the defensive side of the ball because the player needs to do almost everything at a high level.
They need to communicate effectively and pass off crossers in zone coverage. They need to come down and play the run and make tackles while also being able to drop back and cover deep when needed.
Downs is that exact type of player. He plays with the purpose and instincts of a veteran rather than a rookie. Downs has already been asked to play man coverage, blitz the quarterback, play the deep half and cover the flats. And he’s shown he can do it all.
Already Earned Trust
The last time the Cowboys had an effective nickelback was Daron Bland in 2023, but something feels different with Downs.
Bland was exceptional at positioning and coverage but lacked some of the skills many top nickelbacks have. At times, he seemed hesitant to come downhill and make a tackle.
Cowboys fans haven’t seen a player as versatile and capable as Downs in a while.
That versatility has already earned him significant responsibility within the defense.
Cowboys coaches reportedly considered Downs for the green dot after Demarvion Overshown went down. A rookie safety being considered for that responsibility shows how much trust the coaching staff has in him.
But it’s not just the coaches who hold Downs in high regard. His teammates are seeing the same thing.
“We’re not even looking at [Caleb Downs] as a rookie. We’re looking at him as a guy that’s going to change this defense around, going to change the culture. He’s won at every level of football,” Overshown said.
Downs Knows There’s Still More to Come
After defeating the Commanders 37-20, Downs reflected on his performance, in which he recorded nine tackles, one forced fumble and one pass deflection.
“I was pretty much just the curl-flat player; I was in a high-low situation and was just reading the quarterback’s eyes. Later on in my career, you’ll see that ball picked.”
Although Downs shined in his second NFL game, he knows there is still room for improvement.
That might be the most encouraging part of his start.
Downs has already shown the versatility, instincts and physicality to make an impact in multiple roles, but he understands that he is still learning.
Caleb Downs is just getting started.
