Last week’s game took a heavy toll on Panthers fans, not only mentally in the loss but physically with the laundry list of accumulated injuries. But like the forward march of time, the Panthers must move on. They press ahead into what is arguably the most important game of the season so far.
It is now Week 4, and the Panthers have their first prime-time slot of the year, facing the Detroit Lions at home on Sunday night. This will also be Carolina’s first Sunday Night Football appearance since 2016, ending the NFL’s longest active Sunday Night Football drought.
The question heading into this matchup is simple: Can Bryce Young carry this team through its growing list of injuries and prove that Carolina can compete with one of the NFC’s better teams?
The Injury Problem
Let’s kick things off with the major elephant in the room heading into this Week 4 matchup. The Panthers have already accumulated injuries among 10 of their key players. Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson have been placed on injured reserve, with Horn dealing with a torn quad and Jackson a groin strain.
Running back Jonathan Brooks is also on IR after surgery to repair a core muscle injury. Guard Damian Lewis and safety Nic Scott are both sidelined and questionable coming into this week. Offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu remains on the PUP list with a knee injury.
Wide receiver Jalen Coker is still questionable while being monitored for a quad strain, and Xavier Legette’s status remains unknown after he went down with a knee injury following Week 2. These injuries come on top of the already devastating season-ending blows to Nic Scourton and Chris Brazzell II.
After listing all of those off, it certainly seems like a rather large hill to climb for the Carolina Panthers — not only to win this game but to somehow continue through the rest of the season. It may seem insurmountable, but it’s not impossible.
And that’s where Bryce Young comes in.
Bryce Has To Deliver
Young has already thrown for over 900 yards and seven touchdowns through the first three weeks of this season. He leads the league in passing yards and has been commanding his offense in a way the Panthers haven’t seen from him before.
The Detroit Lions’ defensive secondary is dealing with injuries and can be exploited. Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, two of Detroit’s premier defensive backs, remain sidelined, while Avonte Maddox and Thomas Harper are also out.
That leaves a depleted Lions secondary that Bryce Young, T-Mac, Darren Waller, and the rest of this receiving corps should be able to attack.
The offensive line’s abysmal mistakes hurt Carolina’s chances of winning last week. After reviewing the film and planning accordingly, the hope is they don’t make the same mistakes twice, especially in a high-stakes game like this.
If the offensive line does its job, it gives Young time in the pocket and allows the team to establish the run game with Hubbard and, hopefully, use AJ Dillon more. If Young wants proof on film that he deserves an extension, this is the game to provide it. He also has a chance to solidify his name as this team’s franchise quarterback.
No one player on the defensive end can replace Jaycee Horn’s value. It will certainly be a next-man-up mentality across the board. Young guys like Lathan Ransom, Will Lee III, and Chau Smith-Wade have to elevate their game if they want to combat the Lions’ offensive power.
Pressure Jared Goff
It will be Bryce Young versus Jared Goff on Sunday night. Just last week, Goff had his offense targeting eight different players, so it won’t just be powerhouse wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown or tight end Sam LaPorta to watch.
Limiting Goff must come from one of two things. First, the blitz needs to be there. He needs to be pressured. Jaelan Phillips and Princely Umanmielen have their work cut out for them.
The Panthers can’t let Goff sit comfortably in the pocket and pick apart a defense already missing some of its biggest pieces. If Carolina can consistently create pressure, it can force Detroit into uncomfortable situations that can change the entire flow of the game.
Secondly, they need to stop the run. The Lions arguably have the best running back in the game right now in Jahmyr Gibbs. The last thing Carolina needs is for him to break off huge runs for big gains.
The Panthers don’t have to completely shut down Gibbs, but there has to be a limit. If Carolina can keep him under 120 yards, that gives the defense a chance to force Jared Goff to beat them through the air and gives Bryce Young and the offense a real shot at winning.
Thankfully, with the little luck the Panthers have left, linebacker Devin Lloyd seems to be healthy and ready to go into this prime-time battle. He will be one of the keys to snuffing out or slowing down this Lions’ run game.
A Prime-Time Showdown
If those two strategies can work and sustain throughout the game, it’ll be a shootout to see who can lead their team to victory. Bryce Young has the opportunity to come out on top.
Through the ups and downs of the season’s start, Young has been the only consistent piece in this organization. If Young can use his weapons—Coker, T-Mac, Waller, and the rest—the Carolina Panthers can head into their early bye with a win.
This could be a true showdown of the ages. Under the lights, against one of the league’s best teams, and with injuries piling up around him, Bryce Young has a chance to make this game a cornerstone of his chapter with the Carolina Panthers.
This is what prime time is made for. If Young and the Panthers can rise to the occasion, this game could be the momentum shift that changes their season’s trajectory.
Final prediction: Panthers 33, Lions 30.
