During the 2026 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings held the seventh overall pick. When the time came to make their selection, the Kings had their guy: Arkansas Razorbacks guard Darius Acuff Jr.

Many people in the league, along with NBA and Sacramento fans, knew that if Acuff Jr. fell to the Kings at the seventh pick, he would be the best available. He was a “can’t miss talent” in this class.

In this year’s March Madness, Acuff Jr. exploded onto the scene despite being just 19 years old. In three NCAA Tournament games, he averaged over 29 points and led Arkansas to the Sweet 16. He instantly became a rising star and an inevitable top 10 draft pick.

Now that he is considered the new face and future of the Sacramento Kings, how can Acuff Jr. change the trajectory of this currently disappointing franchise?

Darius Acuff Jr. Brings Short- and Long-Term Offensive Impact

Acuff Jr. averaged 23.5 points, 6.4 assists, and 3.1 rebounds in his lone season with the Razorbacks. He also played quite efficiently. Acuff Jr. shot over 48% from the field, 44% from three, and 81% from the foul line.

Acuff Jr. didn’t just produce, but also raised his game to historic levels. He set single-season records at Arkansas for points (845) and assists (232). These accomplishments helped him earn SEC Player of the Year honors.

And, looking ahead to his time in the league, this production will only help his teammates, especially the Kings’ big men, like Domantas Sabonis and Maxime Raynaud.

The Kings desperately need this offensive ability from a starting guard, especially since parting ways with De’Aaron Fox during the 2024-25 season. Acuff Jr. finally gives Sacramento a new and younger guard to work with.

The Kings averaged 111 points per game last year, which ranked 28th out of 30 teams. Additionally, their offensive rating was 111.4, per the NBA, a bottom-five mark in the league. And defensively, the team didn’t play any better. The Kings allowed 121 points per game, ranking fourth-worst in 2025-26.

Now, after drafting a talent like Acuff Jr., many believe Sacramento’s offense will only improve as Acuff starts developing.

It should be noted: he may struggle early on. After all, he is only 19. But, with some development, the Kings’ offense will inevitably improve as Acuff Jr. does. The best part: he has plenty of room to grow.

Cultural and Identity Shift for Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings are in a rebuilding phase after a 60-loss season. Acuff Jr.’s arrival could bring a more aggressive, high-energy identity to Sacramento, similar to the memorable “Beam Team” from a few years ago. His arrival on the team could also help re-energize this fanbase.

During draft night, here’s what Acuff Jr. told CBS News Sacramento after being selected:

“[You have] a winning player coming. I’m just excited to get stuff going, to get going with the team. Y’all are getting a dog, for sure,” Acuff Jr. said

Adding to the optimism, Kings’ fans were certainly thrilled when it was announced that Acuff Jr. was headed to Sacramento.

Putting a cherry on top of all of this, Kings General Manager Scott Perry coached Acuff Sr., Darius’ father, at Eastern Kentucky in the nineties. This has created a personal bond between the GM and the Acuff family.

The bottom line for Acuff Jr. and the Kings

No prospect is ever perfect. This goes for Darius Acuff Jr. The most widely cited flaw in his game is his defensive limitations.

Luckily for Acuff Jr., Sacramento’s leadership — like Perry and head coach Doug Christie — has repeatedly stressed the importance of defense and building a team and an identity around that.

If the Kings can develop Acuff Jr.’s defense, integrate him into a strong supporting cast, and give him the right system, he has the potential to be a generational offensive prospect for Sacramento.
