For the first time in a long time, the Washington Commanders have legitimate Super Bowl aspirations for the 2025 campaign. They’ve found their franchise quarterback, begun construction on a new stadium, and reignited a once-weary fanbase with hope.
However, one glaring concern could hold them back: their defense, specifically, the defensive line. In a division featuring Saquon Barkley behind the best offensive line in football, dominating the trenches is a necessity.
Daron Payne remains the last man standing from what was once a star-studded group of first-round picks that included Jonathan Allen, Chase Young, and Montez Sweat. What was once the foundation of a rebuild is now the weakest aspect of the team. Despite being the highest-paid player (signed a 4-year, $90 million deal in 2023) on the roster, Payne’s impact in 2024 fell far short of expectations.
Payne’s Disappointment in 2024
Last season, Payne did not have the season that was expected of the 10th-highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL. He played all 17 regular season games but recorded just four sacks, a stark decline from the 11.5 sacks he racked up in 2022, which earned him that massive extension.
According to Pro Football Focus, Payne graded out as a slightly below-average player in 2024, earning a 53.7 overall score. He was rated as an average pass rusher and a subpar run defender, a disappointing return for someone expected to anchor the defensive line.
For comparison, Dexter Lawrence, who earns the same annual salary as Payne, finished 2024 with an 89.9 overall grade, which is second among interior defensive tackles.
Training Camp Buzz
At the voluntary training camp this summer, Payne has been turning heads. Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. said Payne has “stood out” with his leadership and play on the field.
It’s a promising sign for Commanders fans, but it’s worth remembering—it’s only June, and meaningful snaps are still months away.
While Payne still needs to elevate his play on the field, his value as a veteran leader could be just as crucial. If he can mentor young players like Jer’Zahn Newton and help integrate newcomers like Javon Kinlaw and Deatrich Wise Jr., it could go a long way in stabilizing the Commanders’ defensive front.
Commanders fans now wait to see if Payne can return to his 2022 form, because if he can, he is one of the best defensive tackles in football.
