The 2025 NFL season is almost here, and anticipation has reached its peak.

Every year begins with a fresh slate, but the first month often provides a clear direction. Some teams demonstrate cohesion and chemistry from the start. Others stumble and struggle to recover. While it’s too soon to crown a champion, the league’s opening weeks always reveal a handful of teams separating from the pack.

These early contenders often feature strong coaching setups, consistent quarterback play, and balanced rosters.

Fans, analysts, and bettors alike should keep a close watch on how each team starts. The early weeks matter, and for some of these contenders, the momentum they build will be hard to slow down.

The Eagles Return With Firepower

The reigning Super Bowl winners head into the season with stability and high expectations. Their formula hasn’t changed: offensive explosiveness, defensive toughness, and a quarterback who thrives in big moments.

Jalen Hurts Looks Even Sharper

Last season ended with Jalen Hurts hoisting the Lombardi. Now, he returns with a deeper understanding of the offense and upgraded support. His chemistry with A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith has only strengthened. Hurts continues to grow as a passer and decision-maker. Early matchups provide him with the opportunity to continue building confidence.

Defense Can Dominate Again

The Eagles’ defensive unit remains among the best. Vic Fangio’s system now enters its second year, which should elevate efficiency. The front four can control games, especially if Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter stay healthy. Their ability to create pressure without blitzing lets the secondary do what they do best. In the early part of the season, they’ll be tested by high-powered offenses (Cowboys, Chiefs, Eagles), but depth and experience could give them the edge.

AFC West Still Runs Through Kansas City

The Chiefs remain the team to beat in the AFC. Even with minor roster turnover, their foundation stays elite.

Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid create the league’s most dangerous duo. He’s not just the best quarterback in the league— he’s the most consistent.

Mahomes enters 2025 looking to reach his sixth Super Bowl. His off-script brilliance promises to mask any growing pains with new receivers. While Travis Kelce may see fewer snaps in his supposed farewell tour, Mahomes will keep finding ways to move the chains. Recent reports highlight improved timing with Rashee Rice, giving the passing game added firepower.

In the playoffs, the Chiefs’ defense clamped down when it mattered. The trend should continue. George Karlaftis and Chris Jones form a strong pass-rush tandem. With so much early optimism, the Chiefs have drawn attention at reputable online sportsbooks like FanDuel.

Those tracking FanDuel NFL futures are eyeing Kansas City’s opening matchups closely, expecting odds to shorten with each convincing performance.

Lions Look to Reestablish Regular-Season Success

The Lions quickly went from the top of the heap to the bottom of the couch last year. Their No. 1 overall seed in the NFC was quickly erased with a stunning blowout at the hands of the No. 6-seeded Washington Commanders.

Nonetheless, head coach Dan Campbell continues to build an identity around aggression and belief. Many still question Jared Goff, but he keeps proving himself. In Detroit, he has been efficient and fearless behind a dominant offensive line that keeps him upright. Wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown has become a go-to option, while Jameson Williams stretches the field vertically. The offense scored early and often last year, and that rhythm looks sustainable.

This isn’t the porous group from two years ago. The defense now features legitimate playmakers like Aidan Hutchinson, who’s entering his prime. They’ve also added physicality at linebacker and speed in the secondary. The first four games include physical matchups, but this unit thrives on contact. If they force turnovers early, the Lions could start 4–0.

Watch the Bills for Early Season Redemption

Buffalo has had playoff heartbreaks, but enters 2025 retooled and focused. Their Super Bowl window remains open as long as Josh Allen stays healthy and protected.

Allen’s Last Task

Allen remains one of the most dangerous dual-threats in football. He’ll need to work on lowering turnover numbers and staying efficient inside the red zone. He still has a cannon arm and plenty of mobility, but his focus this year should be sustainability over highlight reels.

Because he really only has one task left.

Younger Weapons Ready to Shine

Buffalo’s front office bet on youth to fill holes. Tight end Dalton Kincaid and wide receiver Keon Coleman are expected to step up. Coleman’s size gives Allen a red-zone target, while Kincaid looks ready to lead in receptions. If both deliver, Buffalo could post some of the league’s highest early point totals.

The Packers Could Shock the NFC

With Jordan Love taking the next step, the Packers might become the surprise of September. They’re young, confident, and a threat in what can be depicted as the toughest division in football.

Despite battling injuries and one of the worst WR drop rates in the league throughout last season, Love showed poise and accuracy in big moments. This offseason, he’s looked sharper and more assertive. The offense now runs through him, not around him. He gets support from a top running back in Josh Jacobs and rising receivers like Jayden Reed and rookie Matthew Golden. If his early performances carry over, the Packers could steal wins from more hyped teams.

The Packers’ defense is led by one of the league’s top safeties in Xavier McKinney, whose range and instincts reshape their secondary. Kenny Clark and Rashan Gary anchor the front, giving the team a mix of strength and speed. Green Bay’s early schedule features a challenging start, so early defensive success could build much-needed aura.

The Impact of a Strong Opening Month

The first month of the NFL season does more than establish standings; it builds identity. Teams like the Eagles and Chiefs aim to maintain dominance, while the Lions, Bills, and Packers hope to turn strong starts into statement seasons.

September isn’t about perfection— it’s about direction. Early wins boost locker room confidence and ease pressure later on. Each of these contenders enters with different narratives but shares one goal: to control their destiny from the first snap.
