The Baltimore Ravens entered the offseason with one clear question along the offensive line: who would start at center?

Baltimore answered that question by signing former Seahawks and Browns center Ethan Pocic in July. Although Pocic is working back from a torn Achilles, Pocic gives the Ravens their most experienced option at the position and could stabilize the middle of the offensive line.

Pocic’s Experience Gives Him the Inside Track at Center

Competition should determine the starting center job, but Pocic deserves to enter training camp with the inside track.

The Ravens’ other options at center have limited experience as full-time starters, while Pocic has spent multiple seasons handling the responsibilities that come with the position. Experience matters, especially when protecting a franchise quarterback and leading an offensive line.

A Veteran Center Would Stabilize Baltimore’s Biggest Question Mark

The center position affects far more than snapping the football.

Being a center requires communication, protection adjustments and leadership before every play. A veteran who understands those responsibilities can help the entire offensive line operate more efficiently. That type of stability also benefits Lamar Jackson as the Ravens continue building around one of the league’s most dynamic offenses.

Baltimore has assembled a solid offensive line on paper, but center remained the one position without a proven upgrade. Every other projected starter brings either established production or long-term upside. That uncertainty made the middle of the offensive line the Ravens’ biggest remaining question.

Ethan Pocic changes that conversation. If he returns healthy, the Ravens add a proven starter at center instead of relying on inexperience. That gives Baltimore its best opportunity to solidify the offensive line before Week 1.

Pocic Brings Value Beyond the Contract

Baltimore also added Ethan Pocic without making a big financial splash, only signing for $3 million with additional incentives.

Veteran starters rarely become available at an affordable price, making this signing a low-risk investment. If he returns to form, the Ravens could receive quality starting play at center after losing Tyler Linderbaum to the Raiders in free agency, all while preserving cap flexibility for other positions.

Pocic’s Achilles Injury Is a Fair Concern, but Not a Dealbreaker

The torn Achilles from Week 14 last season creates a fair question entering training camp, but it should not erase everything Pocic accomplished before the injury. His recovery will ultimately determine whether he earns the starting job, yet his reputation around the league shows why teams continue to trust him.

Former teammate Joel Bitonio recently praised Pocic’s commitment, saying “when he’s in the building, he’s 100% football.” Bitonio also highlighted his dedication to the game and the presence he brings inside the locker room.

If Pocic returns 100%, the Ravens should feel confident giving him the opportunity to be the starting center.
