When Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the media during his introductory press conference, the former NFL linebacker explained his vision clearly and simply.
“The goal is to win the AFC East, host home playoff games and compete for championships,” Vrabel said. “We want to be good enough to take advantage of bad football.
Vrabel has been linked to the head job in New England ever since the organization parted ways with Belichick following the 2023 season. However, since Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft had a succession plan in place for former head coach Jerod Mayo dating back to 2019, the Patriots did not have a proper head coach search, and Mayo was hired rather quickly.
The former All-Pro has a chance to bring the franchise back to the glory days he lived through two decades ago.
Vrabel has proven successful as a head coach before, leading the Tennessee Titans to the AFC Championship game in 2019 with a supporting cast that could be described as above average. That Titans squad actually ended the Brady-Belichick dynasty in those same playoffs during the wildcard round.

Vrabel brings stability to the Patriots franchise, which desperately needs it. When Mayo was in charge, the former Pro Bowl linebacker often contradicted himself during media sessions and accidentally created stories bigger than the actual football games.
The newfound stability will likely transition immediately into the offseason, as the new head coach is already looking forward to free agency. Vrabel recently sat down on the Greg Hill show to explain his process for free agency.
“The only thing free agents care about is green, and it’s not natural grass, ” Vrabel said. “There’s two forms of free agency. One is trying to go out and maximize your earning potential and go for the top dollar… We’re gonna identify players at all different levels and it’s a process putting it all together.”
While searching for a head coach, many were concerned about how Vrabel would potentially develop Drake Maye as the Titans were a run-first time during Vrabel’s stay as head coach. Tennessee consistently ranked near the bottom of the league in passing attempts each year, while Vrabel was the head man, even reaching dead last in 2019 and 2023.
However, the new head coach addressed these concerns with a pretty reasonable answer during an appearance on WEEI.
“Our best player was our running back, as you can see in Baltimore.”
While Mike Vrabel is not Bill Belichick, nor is he Jerod Mayo, it’s safe to say that New England fans can be optimistic about the future of their franchise.
