The New York Knicks had a historic championship run this past season. Atlanta’s CJ McCollum stood as one of the biggest threats to that title.

This past week, McCollum agreed to a one-year, $21 million contract extension with Atlanta that includes a trade kicker, ensuring he will not enter free agency on June 30. The extension comes less than six months after the Hawks acquired McCollum in a blockbuster midseason trade, showing the organization’s vision for the 2026-27 season.

Why Atlanta Could Not Afford to Let Him Leave

When the Hawks acquired McCollum in January, the move was widely viewed as a roster-balancing decision as a part of Trae Young’s departure. Yet what followed was something more impactful, as McCollum quickly became a consistent, experienced player that Atlanta lacked.

His scoring, decision-making, and veteran playstyle helped guide the Hawks through the second half of the season, ultimately turning them into a legitimate playoff threat. The Atlanta Hawks went 27-14 in the regular season with CJ McCollum in the lineup (including 19-6 when he started). McCollum appeared in 41 regular-season games (25 starts), averaging 18.7 PPG, 4.1 APG, 3.1 RPG, and 1.0 SPG.

The moments that have stuck with the fans, however, came during the playoffs, where McCollum’s biggest contributions came when the lights were the brightest.

While facing the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks in the first round, Atlanta pushed them further than most expected. At the center of that was McCollum, who delivered multiple game-winning shots and averaged 19.2 PPG, 3.0 RPG, and 2.0 APG. The two Hawks wins in the series include a 32-point game by McCollum to tie the series at 1-1, and a Game 3 win with 23 points and a game-winning shot.

Even though Atlanta ultimately fell short in the series, McCollum’s postseason performances elevated his perception within the fanbase.

Earlier this season, General Manager Onsi Saleh spoke about McCollum as he arrived in Atlanta: “(CJ McCollum is) one of the NBA’s most prolific shooters and a respected veteran, and will strengthen our team on the court and in the locker room.”

Although McCollum arrived as a temporary fix, he left the season looking like a foundational piece for the Hawks moving into next year.

Pros, Cons, and Implications of CJ McCollum’s Extension for the 2026-27 season

CJ McCollum’s extension feels like the last piece of Atlanta’s puzzle, though only time can tell if it’s the right one. The coming season will test whether the pros of this extension outweigh its cons. McCollum will have a chance to prove to the city that his performances last season weren’t a one-time thing.

Pros:

  1. Proven clutch scorer and leader, renewing would maintain the chemistry that created the playoff run.
  2. Strong regular-season performances could persist if McCollum continues to flourish and mentor younger players.
  3. Continuity under Quin Snyder as both coach and player renewed through 2026-27.

Cons:

  1. McCollum will be 35 next season, and one bad injury or decline could leave Atlanta with a big hit.
  2. The $21M price is high for a one-year role player, which could have been used on a younger player on a longer contract.
  3. Limits playing time/opportunity for younger guards.

Implications:

  1. Veteran backcourt experience remains, and the Hawks can rotate in new draft pick Kingston Flemings.
  2. The trade kicker (~7.5%) means any trade of McCollum would cost extra. This gives the Hawks a likely plan to use McCollum in 2026-27 and can safely reassess after one season.
  3. The trade kicker is a relatively small price to ensure McCollum doesn’t get shipped out without compensation.

Smart Move or Short-Sighted?

Overall, the move is a pragmatic one, in which McCollum stays on a short deal after he earned it. It keeps the Hawks in playoff contention with the same core of players for 2026-27. Additionally, Atlanta won’t be left scrambling for a player of his caliber and experience mid-season.

This coming season will test whether the one-year extension will pay off, and both Atlanta fans and players will be eager to see the results of this decision. Most analyst reactions are positive, and with the acquisitions of rookies Flemings, Zuby Ejiofor, and Henri Veesaar, the Hawks look to improve their postseason standing past the first round.
