Last week, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert surprised Dallas Wings point guard Paige Bueckers by presenting her with the 2025 KIA Rookie of the Year award while she walked down the dance tunnel on The Jennifer Hudson Show. The moment may have caught Bueckers off guard, but for her supporters, the outcome was never a doubt: This award was hers.
Star Power and Broken Records
It’s been a whirlwind year for the 23-year-old. In April, Bueckers capped her legendary career at UConn with the program’s 12th NCAA National Championship before being drafted No. 1 overall by the Dallas Wings. Now, just five months later, she’s added Rookie of the Year to a resume that already looks historic.

Bueckers’ rookie season was a masterclass in balancing star power with efficiency. Averaging 33 minutes, 19.2 points, 5.4 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game, she quickly established herself as one of the league’s most reliable young players.
Her 47.4 percent shooting from the field, the highest among guards attempting double-digit shots, undervalued her ability to shoulder a heavy offensive load without sacrificing quality in her defensive game.
The numbers from her first year were record-breaking. Bueckers scored 692 total points and handed out 194 assists in 36 games, the third-most by a rookie in WNBA history.
On August 20, she turned heads when she poured in 44 points against the Los Angeles Sparks, the highest single-game scoring performance ever by a rookie. She also opened her career with 30 straight double-digit scoring games, the third-longest streak in league history, and notched 17 games with at least 20 points: tied for fifth all-time among rookies.
An All-Star From Day One
Bueckers’ dominance wasn’t limited to the regular season. In July, she became just the 10th rookie to start a WNBA All-Star Game, earning a record of 805,000 fan votes — the most ever for a first-year player. She later swept the league’s Rookie of the Month honors in June, July, and August, becoming the first Wings player to achieve the distinction.
For Dallas, Bueckers represents more than just a rookie phenom; she’s the cornerstone of a franchise hungry to return to playoff contention.
