Ja’Kobi Lane Headlines Ravens’ Biggest Training Camp Surprises

The grueling NFL offseason is officially done, and the long-awaited 53-man rosters have been revealed.

Fans can once again be dreaming about the start of the NFL season.

A key part of the offseason headlines are the training camp darlings for everyone’s favorite team. For the Baltimore Ravens, a few of their standouts have a strong chance to even make an impact in Week 1.

Ja’Kobi Lane Making Case for Ravens’ WR2 Spot

Ja’Kobi Lane, the 80th pick out of USC, already has fans’ expectations through the roof.

Lane was brought in as a depth piece, as the Ravens look to get younger at the position. Since being drafted, he has received nothing but praise. In fact, Lamar Jackson has compared him to an all-time great.

According to ESPN’s Jamison Hensley, when he asked Jackson what he thought of Lane, he said, ” I told you, my comparison [is] like Odell Beckham Jr. and DeAndre Hopkins with the hands.”

When Lane was drafted, it was expected for him to compete for the WR3 or WR4 spot as he got ready to battle fellow rookie wideout Elijah Sarratt. Instead, Lane has shown nothing but flashes. Many Baltimore fans even have him clamoring for the WR2 role to replace Rashod Bateman.

His potential has shown up not only in practice but also in the preseason, including an impressive touchdown in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Joe Fagnano Shocking Development

Probably the biggest surprise out of training camp was former University of Connecticut quarterback Joe Fagnano.

After going undrafted in the 2026 draft, he got invited to minicamp and impressed enough to sign with the team. Signed as a spare arm over the course of mini camp, training camp, and finally the preseason, Fagnano continued to surpass all the expectations the Ravens had for him.

Before joining the Ravens, Fagnano completed 69% of his passes for 28 touchdowns with just one interception during his final season with the Huskies. Fagnano, while not the most athletic guy on the field, showed time after time to put the ball where it needed to go when it needed to go.

Throughout the preseason, the undrafted rookie shined. He completed close to 75% of his passes for 509 passing yards, four touchdowns, and one interception.

After their final preseason game, Fagnano was left firmly on the bubble, without an idea if he did enough to warrant a roster spot.

General manager Eric DeCosta surprised Fagnano on Sunday and let him know he made the team. Fagnano is now the QB3 on the team. Now he has a chance to develop and learn behind Lamar Jackson and backup QB Tyler Huntley.

Ethan Burke‘s Asserting Dominance Early

The last surprise of training camp was a full-circle moment: Ethan Burke, an outside linebacker out of Texas. What made it such a special moment for Burke was that he grew up in Pasadena, Maryland, and was going to the University of Maryland to play D1 lacrosse before deciding to play collegiate football.

At Texas, Burke became a staple member of the Longhorns’ defense. In four seasons at Texas, he finished with 114 tackles, 26.5 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks. After going undrafted, he signed with Baltimore in April and soon became a fan favorite. Though he had his moments in camp, he didn’t become this fan favorite until his preseason dominance started. 

What makes this all the more impressive is that Burke was competing against 2024 third-round pick Adisa Isaac, a player who’s had his moments but hasn’t stayed healthy. Burke’s success is just a thumbtack on a bulletin board. His play presents a clear pattern: Baltimore finds impact players overlooked in the draft.

In fact, in 22 out of the last 23 seasons, at least one undrafted free agent has made the team. By now, it’s a point of pride not only for the franchise but for fans, too. 

With Burke, Lane, and the other training camp breakouts’ continued success, the Ravens are even closer to once again lifting the Lombardi trophy.
