The most significant news surrounding the Golden State Warriors this offseason has been the situation involving Jonathan Kuminga‘s future.
Kuminga, a restricted free agent, has attracted interest from multiple rebuilding teams such as the Chicago Bulls, Phoenix Suns, and Sacramento Kings. Like many other restricted free agents this offseason, however, there has been little to no significant progress made on a deal between Kuminga, the Warriors, or a prospective new team.

The Contract Situation
Kuminga is one of the most sought-after free agents left on the market due to his exceptional offensive capabilities and high-flying athleticism. This athleticism is evident in his already impressive collection of thunderous dunks.
The Warriors recently offered Kuminga a two-year, $45 million deal, with a team option in the second year of the contract. The young forward feels his worth is higher than that. He declined their offer, seeking a significantly better and more player friendly contract. ESPN reports that Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner, had initially proposed a three-year, $82 million deal during Summer League.
Kuminga does not believe the Warriors should have so much control over him — he could find a better, long-term opportunity elsewhere right now if he were an unrestricted free agent.
The two sides have gone back and forth all summer, trying to reach a new deal that is satisfactory before Kuminga’s contract expires at the end of the upcoming NBA season.
They have yet to make any progress.
Kuminga’s Importance
The Warriors need to reach an agreement with the rising star as soon as possible if they want to maintain their hopes of another championship.
Kuminga provides an entirely different form of offense for the Warriors than they typically use, which includes attacking the basket and finding his spot in the midrange. He provides versatility to a team that is built around perimeter shooting.
Kuminga, who already has an impressive collection of poster dunks, also provides a lob threat for the elite passing of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
While he can sometimes appear unpolished on defense or out of control on offense, Kuminga is still developing in his NBA career and brings much-needed youth to a Warriors team that is rapidly increasing in age.
Kuminga averaged 15 points per game last season, looking confident and ready to take the next step to NBA stardom — a step that many Warriors fans want him to take in the Bay. He can lead the way for the historic franchise and provide it some hope after the all-time greats of Curry, Green, and Jimmy Butler depart.

The Golden State Warriors are preparing for a strong NBA season with a deep playoff run. They are coming back with a vengeance after last year’s title hopes were cut short once Curry injured his hamstring.
The team has made no roster changes up until this point, stressing the confidence they have in their team, Kuminga included.
