The Orlando Magic have advanced to the Emirates NBA Cup quarterfinals despite losing 121-106 to the New York Knicks on Tuesday night.
The Knicks’ victory secured their position at the top of East Group A, while the Magic clinched a wildcard spot. Orlando only needed to avoid a defeat by more than 37 points to advance, and their loss by a smaller margin gave them a tiebreaker advantage over the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons, who had worse point differentials.
Knicks Dominate Shorthanded Magic
The Knicks thoroughly dominated an Orlando Magic team missing star player Paolo Banchero.
Banchero had been enjoying an exceptional season, averaging 29 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game before his oblique injury. The Knicks cruised to victory despite strong performances from Franz Wagner, who scored 30 points, and Moritz Wagner, who added 20 points off the bench. New York’s balanced scoring attack was led by Karl-Anthony Towns with 23 points and 15 rebounds, Jalen Brunson with 21 points, and Josh Hart with 19 points.

However, the Magic managed to trim the deficit to 31 points by the end of the third quarter. A strong fourth-quarter rally, in which they outscored the Knicks 31-15, was enough to keep Orlando’s Emirates NBA Cup hopes alive.

The significance of point differentials in determining tournament advancement added a refreshing international basketball element to the NBA Cup. Traditionally, point differential has not been a key factor in NBA competitions. Still, its importance in the NBA Cup has brought a new level of excitement to the league since the tournament’s introduction last season.
