Michaela Onyenwere comes to the Washington Mystics as more than just a player. Despite being in only her fifth season in the WNBA, she is one of the veterans on this young roster and, at 26, is currently the oldest player on the team.
Onyenwere’s Coaching Experience
Onyenwere spent time as an assistant coach at UCLA and helped lead the Bruins to a national championship during the 2026 NCAA Tournament. Two players from that championship team — Lauren Betts and Angela Dugalic — are now her teammates in Washington, creating a unique full-circle moment.
Teammates and Head Coach Sydney Johnson have consistently praised her leadership and presence around the team. She has become someone this group leans on for experience and stability. Just five years removed from winning WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2021, Onyenwere now finds herself in a different role — being asked to be one of the adults in the room.
That transition has not gone unnoticed.
Johnson previously spent time with Onyenwere while serving as an assistant coach with the Chicago Sky, giving him firsthand experience with what she brings beyond the box score. He spoke about her professionalism, her approach to the game, and the impact she has on younger players navigating the league for the first time.
“I just talked about her with a number of people today of how happy I am to have her here,” said Johnson. “The role that she plays. On and off the court, in the locker room. She’s wonderful. She’s a real pro, really takes her player development seriously.”
Onyenwere’s Voice and Experience Are Pivotal
For a Mystics team balancing development with competitiveness, leadership has become one of the most important pieces of their identity. Onyenwere’s value extends beyond scoring or minutes played — it shows up in practices, conversations, and helping establish standards inside the locker room.
While Washington’s younger core continues to grow together, Onyenwere’s voice and experience have become an important bridge between potential and execution.
Her journey from young star to trusted veteran happened quickly, but it is becoming clear that this version of Michaela Onyenwere may be just as valuable as the player she was when she first entered the league.
