Mike Evans’ Addition Is Already Paying Off for the 49ers

Despite two fractured ribs, Mike Evans remains one of the most reliable wide receivers in recent NFL history.

In a Week 5 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks, offense was at a premium. Neither team eclipsed 300 total yards, and they combined for seven turnovers.

The 49ers didn’t have a drive greater than 21 yards until the fourth quarter, when Evans took over. He finished with seven catches, 113 yards, a touchdown, and a two-point conversion in San Francisco’s comeback victory.

Evans’ heroics are nothing new for the 13-year veteran, but they’re a much-needed addition for the 49ers, who have to be overjoyed with their offseason investment in him.

Evans Delivered in the Clutch for the 49ers

Whenever the 49ers needed a big play, Evans stepped up.

That began in the first quarter when Brock Purdy looked to him twice in the red zone: for a third-down conversion, and again for a touchdown.

Evans’ impact grew throughout the game, especially in the fourth quarter. As the 49ers trailed by five points, he delivered big play after big play.

After George Kittle was penalized for offensive pass interference on the first play and sent the 49ers backward, Evans quickly negated the loss by catching a 15-yard reception over the middle, absorbing a hit from the safety, fractured ribs and all.

He caught three more passes on the drive, each for first downs, including conversions on 3rd-and-10 and 2nd-and-21. When the 49ers needed help in must-have situations, Purdy trusted Evans’ jump-ball ability. That included both two-point conversion attempts: he threw a goal-line fade to Evans, which drew a defensive pass interference, then threw another pass to him in a scramble drill for the conversion.

From there, the 49ers won as both teams exchanged field goals.

“I’m one of the best receivers in the game, hurt or not,” Evans said after the game. “I got a big frame, so if you throw it around me, I’m going to do my best to try to make those contested grabs.”

Evans’ Contested-Catch Skills Haven’t Slipped

Evans pulled in four contested catches against the Seahawks, per Pro Football Focus. That brings his total to nine for the season, third-most among all players.

Evans’ superstar ability to come down with difficult catches is one of his defining traits as a receiver. Years from now, when people discuss his career, it has to be among the first things mentioned.

Evans even has a contested catch immortalized in NFL history: a one-handed grab through a massive hit in Week 9 of the 2016 season, which earned NFL Play of the Year honors.

As shown on Sunday, Evans’ leaping ability and sticky hands through contact remain game-changing traits.

Can San Francisco Keep Leaning on Evans?

Evans hauled in 113 of Brock Purdy’s 189 yards against the Seahawks, a workload that shows both how good he is and how much San Francisco needs him. In a divisional game that doubled as payback for last season’s 41-6 playoff loss, the 49ers’ season swung on his hands, and he delivered.

The harder question is what comes next. After losing Ricky Pearsall and De’Zhaun Stribling, and with Deebo Samuel expected to miss time, Evans is the passing game’s lifeline. The road ahead will keep asking more of him, but being so reliant on a 33-year-old playing through two fractured ribs isn’t a plan Kyle Shanahan likely wants to carry through the season.

Nonetheless, the 49ers are grateful for Evans’ presence this season. He deserves much of the credit for San Francisco’s 5-0 start. For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, Evans may be the final piece to push them over the top.
