The Green Bay Packers had a miserable Week 15 — one that may force the team to rethink its identity for the remainder of the season.
The loss to the Denver Broncos cost the Packers not just the NFC North lead, but also star defender Micah Parsons, who suffered a torn ACL late in the third quarter. Parsons has been the driving force behind Green Bay’s defense, generating 70 pressures and 12.5 sacks this season. Navigating his absence will be a defining challenge for the Packers moving forward.
Through Week 15, the Packers rank eighth in the NFL in points allowed — a strong mark. However, they generate turnovers at the league’s eighth-lowest rate, with just 13 takeaways on the season.
The top nine teams in total takeaways are all currently in playoff position. Good football teams find a way to get the football — it’s that simple. With Parsons gone, creating turnovers becomes even more critical for a defense searching for a new identity.
A More Aggressive Approach
A decline in the Packers’ defensive production is a reasonable expectation without Parsons. As a result, the offense will need to compensate by sustaining drives and putting more points on the board. Head coach and offensive play-caller Matt LaFleur must be willing to take more risks.
Jordan Love leads the charge offensively and is proving to be among the league’s best quarterbacks. He sits within the top 10 of all major passing categories and leads the league in quarterback rating. LaFleur needs to let him play like it.
Green Bay cannot expect its defense to hold their opponents below 20 points every week. Creating turnovers and leaning into a more aggressive defensive philosophy is how the Packers can stay afloat the rest of the season. They ranked fourth in takeaways without Parsons in 2024. They’ll have to re-channel that turnover production to close the season.
Young Guys Need to Step Up
Green Bay has seemingly dealt with more significant injuries than any team in football. Parsons is the big name, but injuries to several other players have left large holes in the Packers’ gameplan. Injuries to Zach Tom, Evan Williams, and Christian Watson left the Packers’ coaching staff looking for answers at several key positions. Depth is already a concern as the team has already placed several key contributors on the injured reserve list.
The talent is there to overcome these injuries, but it will require several of their young players to step up. Lukas Van Ness and Barryn Sorrell will quickly see an increase in playing time. Their contributions will be key to minimizing the loss of Parsons. Offensively, rookie receiver Matthew Golden needs to start playing up to his pedigree as a first-round pick.
If the Packers’ young core rises to the occasion, generating turnovers and scoring points becomes far more sustainable. It’s the only path forward to success without Parsons.
