Despite the All-Star Weekend criticism, the San Antonio Spurs showcased peak entertainment through dunks, drama, and determination.

Three members of the Spurs were invited to San Francisco this past weekend to participate in the all-star festivities. Victor Wembanyama, Chris Paul, and Stephon Castle each had the chance to showcase their talents as the NBA tried to increase all-star viewership from past years.

Rising Stars Game

This season, both Wemby and Castle earned spots in the Rising Stars competition. However, after Wemby made the All-Star team, he became ineligible to participate, allowing Castle to take center stage— and he did not disappoint.

In game one, with a target score of 40, Castle contributed six points, four rebounds, four assists, and the game-winning shot.

In the Rising Stars Championship with a target score of 25, Castle led the team to victory. He dropped 12 points and assisted on the game-winning basket. Castle played hard throughout earning himself the Rising Star MVP Award.

With the new format, Castle and his team now earned a spot to compete in the All-Star Game on Sunday. Ahead of the match, Castle has a message for the All-Stars stating, “Just be ready for us.”

Skills Challenge

All-Star Saturday Night kicked off with the “skills” challenge. Team Spurs, comprised of Paul and Wemby, suffered a defeat but didn’t go out without causing drama.

The duo recorded the fastest time among all the teams (by a lot). However, they were ultimately disqualified for cheating, which ended their night.

They came up with an interesting strategy. Wemby went first and quickly tossed the balls off the rack, ignoring the usual three-attempt shooting rule. Paul went next and continued to do the same.

The fans booed them as they tried to find a loophole in the rules to win. The TNT broadcast attempted to interview them after but were told by a league official that they were not allowed.

Many believed this strategy was Paul’s idea, but funny enough, Draymond Green, who was at All-Star Weekend, said that Wemby was going around asking several NBA executives about the strategy who all approved. Apparently, he didn’t go asking the right people.

Team Cavs ended up getting the win and Donovan Mitchell commented on the Spurs’ strategy, stating, “They played to win” and followed with, “That was definitely heating though.”

In the end, this was probably the most entertaining moment the skills challenge had in years.

Dunk Contest

All-Star Saturday Night finished off with the Dunk contest. Castle once again had the spotlight and was able to showcase his dunking ability in front of the Chase Center crowd.

On his first dunk, Castle threw down a 360 windmill, scoring 47.2 points out of 50. He came out strong as he followed with a 47.8 on his second dunk.

Castle scored 95 total points in his first two dunks, which was enough to advance him to the finals against the defending two-time dunk champion, Mac McClung.

Castle started the finals with a dunk never seen in the contest before. He grabbed the ball in the air after a made layup to finish an under-the-basket east bay dunk. Despite the creativity and difficulty, Castle was short of a 50, scoring a 49.6.

On his final dunk, he was finally able to score a 50 on a reverse 360 behind the back with the left.

Unfortunately, Castle’s 99.6 points in the final round weren’t enough, and McClung went on to win his third consecutive dunk contest.

Despite not winning, Castle put on a show, and people, including past and current Spurs players, had something to say.

All-Star Game

On Sunday, we got a first look at not only the new All-Star Game format but also All-Star Wemby, representing Chuck’s Global Stars. Castle was also back, making an appearance all three days as the Rising Stars champs competed against Shaq’s OGs.

In game one, Wemby came off the bench, and there was no surprise that he was one of the most exciting players to watch. He finished with six points, four rebounds, one steal, and one block.

In game two, Castle also put up six points as the Rising Stars fell short to Shaq’s OGs.

Unfortunately, Wemby and Castle never got to go head-to-head, but Wemby brought out the competitiveness in the championship game. He had a team-high 11 points and one block, but his team only managed to score 25 in the loss to Shaq’s OGs.

The All-Star Game has been criticized in recent years for its lack of competitiveness. In his first All-Star appearance, Wemby looked to change that narrative and continued his gameday routine, showing that he’s locked in while other players might be there for fun.

He also seemed to show frustration as his team allowed the game-winning dunk by Jayson Tatum.

With the way Wemby approached the game, he will definitely be an All-Star Game MVP in the future.

Acknowledgments

A big part of All-Star Weekend is the media and interviews. Multiple All-Stars took the time to acknowledge the talent of the Spurs stars.
