The Ravens Are Getting Their Most Important Defender Back

Nnamdi Madubuike, the star Baltimore defensive tackle, is returning this season after missing almost all of last season due to a neck injury.

As he recovered, persistent rumors circulated about his health. Some even suggested Madubuike faced the possibility of medical retirement. But on July 29, Ravens DT Nnamdi Madubuike passed his physical and was set to begin practicing with the team.

His return is critical for a defense that struggled after its star defensive tackles went on IR for the season. Getting Madubuike back for training camp restores stability inside the defensive line, which struggled mightily last season. His ability to plug gaps and collapse the pocket makes life difficult for opposing offensive lines.

Instead of wondering whether Madubuike will ever play again, the question is what should be expected of him in 2026.

Baltimore Will Not Rush Madubuike Back

One of the team’s biggest question marks doesn’t involve hoping that a new player can match or exceed last year’s production. Instead, it’s about how long it will take for Madubuike to return to form.

Expect a slow rise in his snap count.

Even though the regular season is still over a month away, Madubuike’s return will still take a while as the team eases him in. Baltimore knows it cannot rush him back if it wants any chance of his old, dominant self back. The snap count approach not only keeps him healthy, but it also keeps the defense stable as he works to get back into form.

Even a Partial Return Elevates the Entire Defense

Madubuike’s presence gives Baltimore something they lacked throughout the 2025 season: stability on the defensive line.

In 2025, Baltimore tied for the third-fewest sacks in the league with 30. A big part of that was Madubuike’s absence. In the two games he played, he had two of those 30 sacks.

If the Ravens can get 80 percent of what he was at the start of last year, the defense should be in a much better position. His presence alone commands respect from quarterbacks and offensive linemen, and it gives the Ravens young defensive players more opportunity to get at the quarterback.

Patience Will Define Madubuike’s Comeback

Madubuike’s clearance to practice is worth celebrating, but expectations should be tempered.

As the 2026 season unfolds, Baltimore staff will continue to monitor Madubuike’s health. They will use a mix of Calais Campbell and their younger interior linemen, like Travis Jones, to hold the fort until Madubuike is ready.

If Madubuike can slowly regain his strength and return to peak physical shape, the Baltimore defense will start to look like the dominant defense the franchise has been known for.

And while his return doesn’t guarantee the same old dominance, it does give hope that the team can finally piece everything together in a run to the Super Bowl.
