Shortly after the Vikings named Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback, the rumor mill began swirling about J.J. McCarthy‘s future in Minnesota.
Pundits theorized he could be waived before the Vikings announced their 53-man roster. McCarthy appeared in two preseason games for the Vikings, completing 9-of-17 passes for 112 yards with no touchdowns or turnovers.
McCarthy missed Minnesota’s final preseason game vs. Denver with an ankle injury. This is alarming considering his injury history since entering the NFL in 2024. After battling Murray through training camp and the preseason, the Vikings demoted McCarthy to third-string quarterback behind Murray and Carson Wentz.
Meanwhile, trade speculation has surfaced over Minnesota potentially finding a new suitor for the former tenth overall pick. So, why are the Vikings the best fit to keep McCarthy in Minnesota?
Kyler Murray’s Uncertain Future
The Vikings are in a unique position after acquiring Murray for nearly nothing. Murray’s contract with Minnesota is a one-year veteran minimum worth $1.3 million. Arizona is paying the remainder of his $36.8 million contract. The 2019 first overall pick is arguably the most talented quarterback to ever play in Minnesota and has yet to turn 30.
The signing is high-reward and low-risk, an absolute bargain for Minnesota. However, there are risks that should be discussed.
Injuries have plagued Murray since he entered the NFL. He missed the majority of the 2022 and 2025 seasons with an ACL tear (2022) and a foot sprain (2025). Therefore, his availability for a 17-game season is in doubt, and the Vikings must think about a reliable backup.
Minnesota is loaded with offensive talent, which should facilitate a productive 2026 campaign for Murray. However, it cannot be dismissed that Arizona chose to pay him $36.8 million to play elsewhere. Concerns about his injury history and work ethic remain.
Two Separate Scenarios for Murray End the Same Way for Minnesota
There are two likely scenarios going forward for Murray’s Vikings tenure. The first is that he is the player the Cardinals thought he was: an immensely talented quarterback who never lived up to his potential, either because of injury or a lack of commitment to preparation. In which case, the Vikings may continue to struggle with him at the helm and again enter the quarterback sweepstakes next offseason.
The second scenario, however, is that Murray lives up to his potential.
Say Murray thrives in Minnesota. This gives them a dynamic centerpiece capable of elevating the offense on his own merit. Then, the Vikings will be forced to make yet another decision at quarterback. Murray would likely command a contract in the $30-40 million range.
Minnesota departed with Sam Darnold after a 14-win season, and Kirk Cousins after spending six years with the team, because of cap negotiations. If Murray resembles the play that earned him the first overall selection, there will be a bidding war.
Murray could find himself in new threads in 2027, and the Vikings will remain in quarterback purgatory. This may very well be a pit stop for the pairing rather than what’s to come.
Murray’s Disastrous Vikings Debut
Murray’s ominous debut in Minnesota is exactly the sort of game that makes his future with the Vikings questionable. On his first pass attempt of the season, Murray panicked in the face of pressure, launching a ball as if he was playing “Jackpot” into double coverage, which resulted in an interception.
This may be chalked up to early jitters in his debut with a new team, but these are the type of plays that have prevented Murray from being an elite quarterback throughout his career. A Minnesota team built on a potent defense cannot afford unnecessary turnovers.
Later in the first quarter, Packers safety Javon Bullard laid a devastating hit to Murray’s head as he attempted to slide after escaping the pocket and taking off for a run. Officials ruled Murray out for the remainder of the game. He has since received a concussion diagnosis.
Murray’s scrambling ability is arguably his greatest upside. However, his small stature and injury history will continue to be a cause for concern, and it remains to be seen how cautious an approach the Vikings will take.
Wentz finished the remainder of the game, earning a 39-22 victory, while McCarthy served as the emergency third-string quarterback. The injury risk of Murray and Wentz alone is enough to warrant McCarthy remaining in Minnesota, even if it is to employ a formidable backup.
McCarthy Has Potential
In spite of all the media criticism that has overshadowed McCarthy’s career, he hasn’t been nearly as bad as the narrative suggests. McCarthy started ten games for Minnesota in 2025 after being sidelined his entire rookie season with a knee injury. In his ten starts, he has a 6-4 record. The Vikings finished 9-8 in 2025, narrowly missing the playoffs.
If McCarthy had been able to suit up for a few more games, it’s likely that Minnesota would have been in the playoffs. Though his passing stats are pedestrian, the Vikings’ offense didn’t do him many favors. Lackluster playcalling, a nonexistent rushing attack, and a porous offensive line contributed to the team ranking 28th in total yards and 26th in points scored.
Neither Wentz nor Max Brosmer found any momentum in the offense in their seven combined games as a starter either. McCarthy has the tools necessary to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. He flashes major potential with touch on his deep ball and his ability to improvise and gain yards with his legs.
The major areas for improvement are the simplicities of quarterbacking that come with experience and development. McCarthy tends to sail balls over receivers, struggles with accuracy on out routes, and has had many passes tipped at the line of scrimmage. Coaches can teach these skills. However, the raw talent evident on tape is much harder to come by, which is why he earned a top ten-draft pick.
Young Talent Needs Development
The Vikings are perpetually good but never good enough. Meaning, they aren’t winning Super Bowls but seldom are bad enough to earn a draft pick high enough to land elite talent at quarterback. The pick that landed McCarthy was the team’s first top ten-selection since 2014.
Murray will be the ninth quarterback to start a game for Minnesota since Kirk Cousins’ departure after the 2023 season. It is true the offense is loaded with talent, but at a certain point, it must be addressed that the plug-and-play approach at quarterback is not working. Rather than continuing the quarterback roulette and hoping something sticks, the Vikings need to develop talent within.
Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and Daniel Jones highlight a few of the NFL signal callers who have had career resurgences in new systems. This shows that sometimes the fault lies with the organization, not the player.
On the Rich Eisen Show in 2024, Vikings head coach and anointed “quarterback whisperer” Kevin O’Connell stated, “organizations fail young quarterbacks before young quarterbacks fail organizations.”
When it comes to McCarthy’s future in Minnesota, O’Connell needs to remember these words. The Vikings believed in McCarthy’s talent enough to select him in the top ten and let Darnold walk.
Everyone knows what happened next. Darnold won a Super Bowl in Seattle. The blame for McCarthy’s lack of development is on the head coach.
What’s Next For McCarthy?
If Minnesota is ever going to be a consistent Super Bowl contender, they must develop consistency at quarterback. A new captain aboard the ship each year simply isn’t going to work. The Vikings need a QB who can build familiarity in the offensive scheme and develop chemistry with the other skill positions.
The best solution is someone who is already in the building. McCarthy has a long future ahead of him at just 23 years old.
O’Connell and the Vikings front office must bring out the best version of their tenth overall pick and keep him in Minnesota. Otherwise, it will be another treacherous road stuck in QB purgatory.
