Victor Wembanyama’s Stellar Performance in Paris: A Homecoming to Remember

The Paris games between the Spurs and the Pacers clearly demonstrate that the NBA’s global strategy will likely work in the long run.

The audience was genuinely excited to see some of the world’s best basketball players compete twice in three days.

Arguably, the games would have been even more exciting if the scores were closer. But for better or worse, Victor Wembanyama and his teammates were in such great shape in game one that there was little hope for the Pacers as the Spurs cruised to a 140-110 win.

Pascal Siakam and Tyrese Haliburton’s performances largely decided the second game. The pair combined to score 51 points en route to a 136-98 Indiana win.

As fans follow Wembanyama’s journey and anticipate his next moves on the court, many look for new ways to engage with the game, from analyzing stats and exploring the latest matchups and trends to taking advantage of the odds provided by NBA sportsbooks.

Victor Wembanyama’s Performance in Paris

Victor Wembanyama received a king’s welcome in Paris, largely because he is a French representative in the toughest basketball league in the world. At 21, his talent is already making a major difference in his team’s games.

One of his advantages, of course, is his towering 7-foot-3 frame. But that quality alone wouldn’t have allowed him to reach the heights of basketball without much hard work.

In the first Paris game against the Pacers, Victor scored a game-high 30 points, added 11 rebounds and had six assists. They helped San Antonio break the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Indiana 45-23.

In the second game, the Pacers put much more pressure on Wembanyama, but he still scored 20 points. Once again, his team’s performance reached its peak in the third quarter, when they posted 36 points. However, this time, they were outscored by nine, six and a whopping 26 points in the other three quarters.

The high number of errors and misses, combined with yet another excellent performance by Siakam and Haliburton, resulted in the Spurs’ defeat.

Wembanyama’s Future

Right now, Wembanyama is the Spurs’ rising star. These two games played in Paris in front of his hometown fans have convinced even some skeptics that he will have a great future in the NBA. But if the team does not achieve anything significant, how long will he continue to play for the Spurs?

Last season, they finished 14th in the Western Conference. Although they have improved this season, they remain outside the Western Conference playoff picture and below .500 as we near the All-Star break. That kind of performance is definitely not sufficient to keep a great player interested in the long term.

Wembanyama’s current contract expires at the end of the 2026-2027 season. His rookie-scale deal pays him $12.7 million this year and will cap at $16.8 million in 2026-27.

Upcoming Games

The San Antonio Spurs will have a very busy February and will need to get their act together if they want to secure a decent result in the Western Conference this season.

Despite Wembanyama’s All-Star level production, the Spurs are just 3-10 since Jan. 4. It was evident an upgrade needed to be made, which is why the Spurs traded for All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings.

For the remainder of February, the Spurs will encounter the following teams:

  • Atlanta Hawks
  • Charlotte Hornets
  • Orlando Magic
  • Washington Wizards
  • Boston Celtics
  • Phoenix Suns
  • Detroit Pistons
  • New Orleans Pelicans (twice)
  • Houston Rockets

Almost all of these teams will be difficult to beat. But if Wembanyama continues to play well and his teammates build a solid strategy around him, the Spurs have a shot at getting back in the playoff hunt.

Wemby Has a Bright Future Regardless

Victor Wembanyama is one of the most talented European NBA players in recent years. If he maintains his current form and improves upon it, he will soon join the MVP conversations.
