Despite early narratives that the 2025–26 NBA Rookie of the Year honor was trending toward players like Cooper Flagg or Kon Knueppel, VJ Edgecombe remains very much in the conversation. This is for good reason. The third overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers has quietly turned steady production and team-impact basketball into a legitimate case for the league’s top rookie award.

Early Expectations vs. Early Reality

Before the season tipped off, most ROTY odds boards had Cooper Flagg of the Dallas Mavericks installed as the runaway favorite. He had an edge over the field by virtue of his No. 1 draft status and preseason hype.

With Flagg averaging 18.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, and having a 42-point game this season, his numbers certainly impress NBA fans.

But as the season has progressed, the narrative has shifted. While Flagg still receives the most attention and remains near the top of the odds, Edgecombe’s consistent play and situational growth have given analysts and fans reasons to reconsider.

Why Edgecombe Has Momentum

Edgecombe’s play has made him more than just a name on a rookie ladder. He has become a key contributor to a competitive Sixers squad. Unlike many ROTY candidates logging heavy minutes on lottery teams, Edgecombe’s production comes within a winning context. He plays alongside established stars such as Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and Paul George.

This context is critical. While players on losing teams can post individual numbers, they often lack opportunities to prove they can impact winning basketball. Edgecombe has already begun taking these opportunities. His athleticism has proven key for the 76ers’ offense. With point scoring and impressive dunks, he is nothing short of ROTY.

Edgecombe’s Production So Far

Right now, Edgecombe isn’t just making headlines; he’s making an impact every night. Edgecombe has strong stats that would help qualify any rookie. He is averaging 15.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and four assists per game. Even with a couple of missed games due to a left calf strain, he is still putting in the hard work. He is putting up the numbers.

Notably, Edgecombe has shown the ability to elevate his game when it matters most: for instance, scoring 22 and 26 points in key games when Maxey missed time and helping keep the Sixers competitive in tough matchups.

His Rookie of the Year odds, while still longer than some contenders, reflect that he’s not merely a distant outsider, but a real contender: +2700 to win ROTY according to some sportsbooks.

Here’s a snapshot of how some of the other top ROTY candidates compare:

Kon Knueppel has been averaging 19 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. What makes Knueppel a strong candidate is his efficient scoring and usage, which have made him a statistical standout.

Another contender, aside from Knueppel and Flagg, is Pelicans Jeremiah Fears. Fears is averaging 15.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists. What makes Fears a contender is that he competes at a professional level at 19. He can be a strong starting point guard. He holds the offenses together well.

The Race Isn’t Over, And Edgecombe’s Case Is Clear

What makes Edgecombe a genuine contender, even beyond raw numbers, is his impact on winning basketball. Rookie of the Year voters often reward players who help their teams succeed rather than simply pad box scores, especially when those teams are in playoff contention. Edgecombe’s place in a competitive Philadelphia rotation gives him a narrative advantage heading into the heart of the season.

While Flagg may still hold the statistical lead on many sheets, the Rookie of the Year race has tightened substantially. VJ Edgecombe’s steady growth, scoring pop, and importance to a winning team make him a compelling challenger as the season unfolds, especially if he maintains his level of production and keeps the Sixers near the playoff picture.

Rookie of the Year isn’t just about talent; it’s about impact. And Edgecombe’s influence has been undeniable.
