The New York Jets have struggled to find a successful head coach since Rex Ryan led them to back-to-back AFC Championship Games following the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Under Aaron Glenn, the team continues to struggle with inconsistent performances and questionable coaching decisions. After disappointing losses to the Las Vegas Raiders and previously winless Miami Dolphins, the Jets face growing questions about Glenn’s future.

If the team’s performance does not improve, New York could once again be searching for a new head coach this offseason.

Potential AFC East Reunion

Former Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott took the 2026 season off from coaching, but he has expressed interest in returning to the NFL. With the Jets potentially searching for a new head coach this offseason, McDermott could be an intriguing candidate.

McDermott’s impressive résumé is something the New York Jets have rarely seen in recent years.

Three of the four full-time head coaches hired, including Aaron Glenn, were first-time head coaches, with Adam Gase being the exception.

McDermott, meanwhile, brings nearly a decade of head-coaching experience and a proven track record of leading teams to the playoffs. His experience could make him an appealing option for a franchise desperate for stability.

Going for an Offensive Mind

Throughout the NFL, young offensive coordinators have found success as head coaches, including Liam Coen and Ben Johnson. While Johnson was considered a highly sought-after candidate, Coen was viewed as a risk with limited NFL experience as an offensive coordinator. The Jacksonville Jaguars took a chance on Coen, and it paid off when he led the team to a 13–4 record in his first season.

The Jets could take a similar risk by pursuing Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle. After working under Johnson in Chicago, Doyle has had the chance to establish himself as a play-caller in Baltimore. He has impressed so far this season, even without Lamar Jackson for most of it.

Although hiring him as a head coach would be a gamble, his offensive background and experience working with successful coaches could make him an intriguing candidate.

Home Run Hire for the Jets

Mike Tomlin is another name being discussed as a potential next head coach of the New York Jets. With Tomlin’s impressive record of never having a losing season in 19 years as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach, he could bring much-needed stability and change the culture in New York.

His experience could help the Jets become more competitive in the coming seasons. The biggest question is whether Tomlin wants to return to coaching or remain in his current role with NBC.

Still, if Tomlin shows even a small amount of interest, Woody Johnson and the Jets should do whatever it takes to bring him to New York. Tomlin’s experience and consistent success could give the franchise the leadership it needs to right the ship and finally become a contender.
