What Were The Biggest Moves of the 2026 NBA Offseason?

The 2026 NBA offseason has produced several major changes across the league.

Several established stars have changed teams, while others have signed important new contracts. The moves have also changed the balance between several teams across both conferences. With the new season approaching, many franchises now have very different rosters, giving analysts and sports followers plenty to assess as they consider how the league could develop. Giannis Antetokounmpo Moves to Miami

The biggest move of the summer saw Giannis Antetokounmpo depart the Milwaukee Bucks. The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player joined the Miami Heat after 13 seasons in Milwaukee. Miami received Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis in the blockbuster trade. Milwaukee received Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware and Kasparas Jakučionis. The Bucks also received several valuable future draft selections.

Trading for a two-time MVP is always a safe bet in the NBA, and with Giannis’ profile and Miami’s needs, this move is undeniably one of the biggest of the offseason. The trade gives Miami elite talent with Giannis, who can score, rebound, defend, and create for his teammates. While Milwaukee has lost arguably the franchise’s greatest-ever player, they enter a new stage, allowing them to rebuild with solid and largely unproven young talent.

Regardless of the move, Giannis still told former Bucks broadcaster Jim Paschke that he is “afraid of change”.

LeBron James Joins Philadelphia

LeBron James created another major headline by leaving the Los Angeles Lakers. The veteran forward signed with the Philadelphia 76ers after seriously considering retirement during the summer. James agreed to a two-year contract worth around $8 million, including a player option.

The move brings James together with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. Philadelphia also completed another major move by acquiring Jaylen Brown from Boston. The Sixers therefore enter the new season with several high-level players across their starting lineup.

Alongside the wealth of experience he brings, LeBron will also bring a unique level of passing and scoring to the 76ers. His presence alone can elevate other players on the team while helping younger players develop alongside his experience. Whilst being one of the greater pick-ups in the off-season, Philadelphia will have to manage LeBron and the team’s minutes efficiently in hopes of a long postseason run.

Jaylen Brown Leaves Boston

Jaylen Brown’s move from Boston to Philadelphia represented another significant change. Brown had spent his entire NBA career with the Celtics before joining the Sixers. He leaves Boston after helping the franchise win the 2024 NBA championship. He also leaves behind his long-time teammate Jayson Tatum, potentially allowing Brown to flourish further, and he’s expected to be one of the Sixers’ leading scorers.

With the acquisitions of Brown and James, the Sixers have undeniably won the NBA offseason, completely transitioning their team without sacrificing much.

LaMelo Ball Heads to Minnesota

LaMelo Ball also changed teams during an active NBA summer. The Charlotte Hornets sent Ball and Josh Green to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Charlotte received Naz Reid, Mo Gueye, and several future draft assets through the agreement.

Minnesota gains another creative guard to play alongside Anthony Edwards. Ball can create shots, find teammates, and push the pace. His arrival gives the Timberwolves another ball-handler in their offensive system.

With his athleticism, Morant offers the Trail Blazers a new scoring option, and his tenacity makes him a great fit.

After years in Memphis, Morant’s departure marks a major roster shift and kicks off a rebuilding process with younger talent. With the leading scorer leaving, the role opens up for one of these younger players to get more touches and court time.

Miles Bridges Moves to Phoenix
