Cameron Boozer enters his rookie season with high expectations after the Memphis Grizzlies selected the 6-foot-10 power forward with the third overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Those expectations go beyond his draft position. In the NBA’s annual general manager survey, Boozer received 50% of the votes for the player most likely to win Rookie of the Year. After a standout freshman season at Duke that earned him Naismith College Player of the Year honors, Boozer has the chance to become a key part of Memphis’ next competitive core.

However, a successful rookie season shouldn’t be measured solely by his box score or whether he wins Rookie of the Year. With expectations already high, Boozer will have to show that his all-around game can translate to the NBA. For a Grizzlies team focused on developing young talent, that progress could matter as much as his production.

Boozer Must Find His Offensive Role

Boozer showed at Duke that he can contribute in several areas. In his one year in college, he averaged 22.5 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game while shooting 55.6% from the field and 39.1% from 3-point range.

Those numbers established him as a productive college player, but the NBA presents a different challenge. Boozer will face stronger defenders, faster rotations and opponents capable of taking away his preferred scoring opportunities.

Memphis appears to be prepared to give him room to contribute in different ways. Coach Tuomas Iisalo highlighted his passing, versatility and his potential to contribute as a ball-handler in screening situations.

A successful rookie season would see Boozer influence the offense even when he isn’t the primary scorer. Creating opportunities for teammates, making sound decisions and scoring efficiently would give Memphis more ways to use him as his role develops.

Consistency Matters More Than Numbers

Rookies rarely perform at the same level every night. Boozer will have to adjust to the NBA’s physicality, defensive schemes and demanding schedule. There will also likely be stretches when his shot just won’t fall.

The important question is how he responds.

Boozer does not need to record a double-double every night to demonstrate his value. Rebounding, making the right pass, limiting turnovers and staying engaged defensively can help him contribute when his scoring is down.

His preseason provided an early look at his all-around potential. Across four games, Boozer averaged 14 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3 assists per game. He shot 47.1% from the field and 33.3% from 3-point range.

Those numbers offer an initial reference point, not a prediction of his regular-season production. Four games are too small a sample to draw firm conclusions, but his ability to contribute as a scorer, rebounder and passer is worth watching as the season progresses.

Defense Will Be Another Test

Boozer’s offensive versatility gives him a strong foundation, but his defensive development will also be important. NBA teams will test his ability to defend different matchups, recognize offensive actions and make the right rotations.

The goal should not be to expect him to become an elite defender immediately. Instead, Memphis needs to see whether he can learn from mistakes, improve his positioning and consistently finish defensive possessions with rebounds.

Boozer’s profile identifies his defensive awareness and active hands as strengths. Translating those traits to the professional level will be an important part of his development.

His progress on that end of the floor could help determine how much the coaching staff trusts him in important situations.

What Success Means for Memphis

Ultimately, a successful rookie season should give Memphis confidence in Boozer’s long-term potential.

That does not require him to lead the team in scoring or carry the Grizzlies into playoff contention. It requires him to establish a reliable role, show that his playmaking translates and demonstrate progress against NBA competition.

The organization invested a third overall pick in Boozer, and his development will be important to the franchise’s future. If he can contribute in multiple areas while improving his consistency and defensive execution, Memphis will have reasons to be encouraged.

Boozer’s rookie season should be judged by more than his final stat line. The most important measure of success will be whether he shows that his all-around game can translate to the NBA and that he can become a foundational player for the Grizzlies.
