Preparation is a chain of custody. Teams may handle equipment, but league rules determine who inspects it and what happens after approval. The sequence usually includes:

Across all four leagues, three variables determine most decisions:
- Surface: grip must be useful without unfairly altering the object.
- Air or temperature: pressure governs inflated balls; cold governs a rubber puck.
- Custody: preparation may involve teams, but officials control final approval and replacement.
That hidden work gives great plays a trustworthy baseline. Mud, a pressure gauge, a humidor or a freezer cannot decide a result, but each removes avoidable uncertainty before competition.
