Being a first-year quarterback in the NFL is like getting thrown into the deep end of the pool.
Yet, Jayden Daniels had one of the best years a rookie quarterback could have in the NFL, leading his team to an NFC championship game and winning the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
With success comes greater expectations, and fans are asking themselves: Can Jayden Daniels live up to his incredible first year?
What is the Sophomore Slump?
Every great rookie quarterback comes into their second season with immense hype, just like a great musician comes back for their second album after a critically acclaimed masterpiece. Some quarterbacks rise to the challenge and match or improve their numbers from last year; others take a step back.
When thinking about recent sophomore slumps, C.J. Stroud comes to mind, as he took a notable step back last season; external factors certainly aided his decline, but it was a sophomore slump nonetheless. Jayden Daniels has a lot working in his favor this season.
Same Offense With a New Twist
Daniels keeps the same head coach, Dan Quinn, and offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsberry. The continuity from last season will surely help his comfort and confidence. Kingsbury has coached Patrick Mahomes and Kyler Murray and has proven to be a perfect fit with Daniels.
Daniels’ number one option, Terry McLaurin, is returning, and he has a new weapon in Deebo Samuel. McLaurin was a huge part of Daniels’ success last year and was a key part of the Commanders’ playoff run.
Samuel is a dynamic runner and hard to bring down. He’s had a lot of success with the San Francisco 49ers and now brings that over to the Commanders. Daniels is in a position to do a lot of great things in an offense he’s familiar with.
Daniels’ Rough Week 2
After a triumphant Week 1 win over the Giants, the Commanders’ Week 2 loss versus the Packers was a tough pill to swallow. Daniels and the offense looked shaky against the Micah Parsons-led defense.
Daniels was sacked four times. The offense couldn’t get anything going early, which led to the 27-18 loss. Austin Ekeler, the Commanders’ running back, went down with a season-ending Achilles injury during the fourth quarter. Ekeler’s injury is a significant blow to the Commanders’ offense.
The Packers game had even more ramifications as Jayden Daniels has a sprained knee and is now considered day-to-day, and his status for the Week 3 game against the Raiders is unclear.
Conclusion
Through two games, Daniels’ performance has been a mixed bag. He’s shown flashes of the quarterback he was last season, while also struggling against the stellar Packers’ defense. Daniels has been calm throughout it all, which inspires hope for his career going forward. His injury is worrying, but not season-ending.
The Commanders have a real shot to compete for a Super Bowl this year if Jayden Daniels can continue to stay poised and comfortable in this talented Commanders offense. Daniels’ career is still in its early stages, but he can cement himself as an elite quarterback with a great season this year, bypassing a typical sophomore slump.
