49ers’ Playoff Hopes Fade After Crushing Loss to Bills

The San Francisco 49ers’ season, if not entirely over, is on the thinnest of life support.

The Niners suffered a devastating 35-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on a snowy night in Orchard Park. With the victory, the Bills remarkably clinched the AFC East title on December 1.

Offensive Struggles Continue

The 49ers were thoroughly dominated on the field.

Offensively, the same struggles that have plagued them all season continued. Red-zone inefficiency once again cost San Francisco, as the team settled for a field goal early in the game. On the opening drive of the second half, Kyle Juszczyk fumbled at the goal line. While the offense did a decent job moving the ball, poor execution in the red zone and critical turnovers resulted in just 10 points.

The wintery weather compounded the 49ers’ offensive woes. Brock Purdy, returning from a shoulder injury that kept him out of the Packers game, managed only 94 passing yards for the night. Missteps included a costly slip by Ricky Pearsall that ruined a potential big play, a ball slipping from Purdy’s hand to cause a turnover, and other miscues affected by the conditions. Overall, the lackluster performance fell far short of what was needed.

Defensive Collapse

Defensively, the 49ers were equally disappointing.

The unit, which struggled with tackling last week against the Packers, was physically overmatched by the Bills. Dalvin Cook averaged 7.6 yards per carry, finishing with 14 carries for 107 yards. As a team, the Bills rushed for 220 yards, dominating the 49ers and running them off the field.

Josh Allen had an efficient game, completing 13 of 17 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns. While the weather limited his opportunities to take over, Allen made key plays when necessary and managed the game at a high level, further strengthening his MVP case.

The Playoff Picture

With the loss, the 49ers fell to 5-7 and now sit two games behind the Seahawks, who lead the NFC West.

To make matters worse, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced after the game that Christian McCaffrey might miss the rest of the season due to surgery for a PCL injury.

Mathematically, the 49ers are still alive in the playoff race. However, given their current state and mounting injuries, their season is teetering on the brink of being over.
