It’s safe to say things haven’t been going well for the Milwaukee Bucks lately.
After losing to the Indiana Pacers in the first round of last year’s playoffs, they are off to a 1-6 start. With their struggles, many believe superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo could force a trade.
On a recent episode of CBS Sports HQ, NBA insider Bill Reiter revealed Antetokounmpo already has a few teams on his radar.
“I am told that Giannis has already let some people know of places he’s eyeing for Miami [Heat] and New York, the other New York, I’m told the Nets and not the Knicks.”
The issues in Milwaukee are well-documented
While the Bucks’ situation is catching a lot of attention, it isn’t the first time Antetokounmpo’s future in Milwaukee has been questioned. After a first-round loss to the Heat in the 2023 playoffs, he stated he wouldn’t sign an extension if Milwaukee wasn’t serious about contending.
Although Antetokoumpo finally signed an extension in October, the problems in Milwaukee continued. Last season, the Bucks went through three coaching changes, eventually landing Doc Rivers. While playing under Rivers, the Bucks recorded a 17-19 record as opposed to the 30-13 record under Adrian Griffin to begin the season.
When the Bucks acquired Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers via a three-team trade, the expectations of a duo involving him and Antetokounmpo were high. However, Lillard failed to perform at his usual standard, averaging 24.3 points and shooting just 35.4% from the 3-point line.
The Heat would welcome Antetokounmpo with open arms
For various reasons, Antetokounmpo would fit perfectly in Miami. Throughout the years, Heat president Pat Riley and head coach Erik Spoelstra have established themselves with a culture of strict discipline. With Antetokoummpo’s willingness to win at any cost, he and the Heat would mutually benefit from this shared mindset.
Antetokounmpo’s playing style could also be a big factor. For most of his career, he has been known for his speed in transition and ability to dominate in the open court. The Heat haven’t been known for their playing pace so their offense would improve with him running the court.
For many years, the Heat have prioritized playing a high level of defense. Antetokoumpo, who has five All-Defensive selections and a Defensive Player of the Year award on his resume, will make sure that tradition continues. The thought of Bam Adebayo and Giannis in the same front court would send shivers down the spine of opposing offenses.
If the Heat decide to pull the trigger on Antetokounmpo, they would have to give up a young asset and several draft picks. A package would potentially be centered around Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr, and every first-rounder for the next decade. That still might not be enough to get the job done, but it’s the best Miami can offer.
