Last year, we looked at four prospects who were primed to take over March Madness. The tournament is a basketball fan’s dream, and allows NBA fans to watch the top prospects all in a condensed setting. Below are five draft prospects who can take over March Madness this year.
1. Markus Howard
Howard was featured here last year, and once again he is capable of leading Marquette on a deep run. This year, Howard is averaging an amazing 27.7 PPG on 40.5% from three. Howard has had 14 30-point games, three 40-point games, and one 50-point game. This man is a pure scorer and is primed to explode anytime he touches the court. Howard is an undersized guard at 5’11”, so his draft prospects are limited. Many expect him to be taken in the second round due to his outstanding scoring ability.
2. Myles Powell
Another electric guard from the Big East, Myles Powell is capable of taking Seton Hall to the Final Four. Powell averages 21 points and has eclipsed 30 three times. His shooting percentages are down this year, but Powell is a prolific scorer who thrives in big moments. March can certainly be his time to shine. Powell’s draft status is very similar to Markus Howard: An undersized second round scoring guard. Someone is bound to take a shot on Powell due to his shot making ability as well as his toughness.
3. Tre Jones
The 2020 ACC Player of the Year is capable of taking over any game. Just ask UNC. In the final minute of regulation and overtime, Jones outscored the entire UNC team 18-15, as well as hit the buzzer beating shot off his own free throw to send the game to overtime. He averages 16.2 points and 6.4 assists per game and is a lockdown defender. Jones has the clutch gene and can will Duke to a win if he has to. His defense and on the court intelligence have many projecting him to be taken in the 20’s, but with a strong March run he could be a riser.
4. Obi Toppin
Toppin has led Dayton to a 29-2 record and it doesn’t look like they are going to slow down any time soon. Toppin is averaging 20 points and 7.5 rebounds on 63.3% shooting from the field. That’s ridiculously efficient. The high flyer is capable of taking over any game with his elite athleticism. Toppin is tracking as high lottery pick due to his efficiency, athleticism, and improved three point shot. His range, however, is slightly up in the air due to his age.
5. Udoka Azubuike
Udoka Azubuike is a force. He is a 7-foot, 270 pound center from Nigeria who has put it all together this year. He is averaging 13.7 points and 10.5 rebounds and has been a defensive stopper. Teams will be unable to score on Azubuike and his size and power will give most other teams fits. Azubuike is not projected to go high due to his inability to shoot of any kind, but you can’t teach size. I think someone will take him with one of the last picks in the second round and make a project out of the big man.
