Every unforgettable moment forged in the memory of fans always has one element.
It wasn’t just the play, but the call behind it. In an endless field of talent, what separates the good from the great?
For the Fox NFL broadcast crew of Joe Davis and Greg Olsen, it’s more than just talent that fuels them: it’s passion.
More Than Just Experience
Sure, it’s undeniable that Olsen brings a wildcard ability from his time in the NFL. The infamous tight-end who spent 14 years in the pro leagues adds an extra layer of insight that Davis — or any other non-player — can generate. Inevitably, this is true across any sport, not just football. Despite this, having playing experience doesn’t just guarantee your ability (No, this is not a shot at Tony Romo).
When an elite NFL player finds a way to carry their experience into the world of commentary, they create something that few people ever make. More than just boring monologues, it’s a deep dive into the field that fascinates fans. Olsen has demonstrated his hard work in how he has learned to evaluate the game as a commentator. In an interview with the New York Times, he said, “I hope people come out of our games and think, ‘I heard two or three things in this game today that I never had anyone lay out for me.’”
When has a former NFL player said something of that magnitude? In spite of giving up his lead position to Tom Brady, Olsen still electrifies the audience with Davis. It’s almost unimaginable to think of a game that has had these two in the booth without it being the most thrilling watch of the day, even with the most boring games.
Joe Davis Is the X Factor
There’s always that one commentating duo that just feels out of place. Perhaps it’s their chemistry or their overall flow when calling the game. Or in their own respective right they simply lack the emotional power to elevate a game. Fortunately, Davis brings a completely different level of heavenly excellence to his calls.
The former collegiate quarterback, Davis found an entirely unique pathway into commentating. During his college years he transitioned from quarterback to wide receiver after a sudden shoulder injury; he had quality stats, nothing out of the ordinary, but proved his worth. It was during the offseason, however, that Davis took up announcing for baseball and basketball. His final three years of college situated him as the voice of the Beloit Buccaneers before his graduation in 2010.
It’s not entirely out of the ordinary for broadcasters to dive into multiple sports for a living. Look at Mike Tirico, who is commentating the NBA playoffs currently. However, a baseball commentator becoming one of football’s best? Outrageous.
Who could possibly forget 2024’s call between the Cowboys and Commanders? Olsen is the mastermind of the operation, but Davis is the one who convinces the company to purchase the product. In such a short time he has easily risen to the top of the commentating world; it’s not just having emotion but knowing how to use it that elevates his talent to another level.
Ultimately, there are incredible broadcasting duos in the NFL who have shown their worth. In no shape or fashion is their ability to be undermined by the greatness of Olsen and Davis. And yet, despite the talent, how many fans around the league could watch one game commentated by all of the broadcasters in the NFL and not pick Davis and Olsen as their favorite?
