Stephen Curry was once in the friend zone with Ayesha Curry

on

Before he was a 2x NBA MVP, before he led the Golden State Warriors to an NBA Championship, before he set the record most threes in consecutive years, even before he led Davidson on a Cinderella run in the NCAA tournament, Stephen Curry was in the friend zone. But of course as you all know, he was able to shoot his way out of that hole as well.

The envy of hopeful romantics all over twitter, Stephen Curry and Ayesha Curry. The golden couple of social media, were not always together from the start. In fact, even when Steph went in for his first kiss, Ayesha denied him of it.

But let’s start this story from the beginning:

The Early Days –

Stephen and Ayesha knew each other very well in High School and were part of the same Church Youth group at the time. But Ayesha’s parents didn’t allow her to date, so our hero Steph had to wait.

College –

Steph had moved past his blue ball days of HS and just led Davidson on a magical run to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. Davidson being located in North Carolina, Curry was still 2500 miles away from his soon to be wife who was in Hollywood trying to establish herself as an upcoming actress. With an invitation to ESPN’s annual ESPY awards in LA, Curry finally had his opportunity. So he played it cool and hit up Ayesha’s DM’s and asked her if she wanted to chill.

And that’s when it happened…

“It was friends vibes,” she said, “until I dodged his first kiss.”

“Yep,” Steph admitted, “I struck out.”

“He was in mid-conversation and came flying at my face like a thief in the night,” Ayesha Curry told Parent Magazine. “So I was like, ‘no.’ Then I thought, ‘Oh, I didn’t know this is what was happening.'”

Happy ending –

As any NBA great would do, Steph did his homework and made the necessary adjustments to his game-plan and proposed to Ayesha.

Fast forward a few years of being a together, asked Ayesha to marry him in his parents driveway, in the same spot where they had their first kiss.

“The plan was to act like we were going to a family cookout. So we pulled up to the house, and I stopped in the middle of the driveway, got down on my knee, and went into my spiel,” Steph Curry said. “Little did I know the whole family was looking out the window, videotaping the moment.”

Final Takeaway: Always shoot your shot.
