Victor Wembanyama was already a global basketball icon at a young age.
With his height, length, ball handling, and shooting ability, he was considered the best prospect since LeBron James. Many people speculated that he would attract a large number of fans.
The French sensation began getting recognition at just 15 years old, playing professional basketball in France. In 2022, Wemby signed with Metropolitans 92, a French basketball club. There, he gained more global recognition, especially in the United States.
When the San Antonio Spurs drafted Wemby with the first overall pick in 2023, it was a big deal as the team already had some French interest due to the French Spurs legend Tony Parker, who retired in 2019. This was Wemby’s chance to bring back the spark of French and international fan engagement to the NBA.
Victor Wembanyama & The 2025 NBA Paris Games
Two years later, in only his second season, the NBA already had two regular-season games scheduled to be played in France for Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs. Both games occurred this past week against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday and Saturday. The two games were played at Accor Arena, and tickets to both were sold out within 24 hours.
On Thursday, the Spurs were considered the visiting team, but it was nothing but a home game for them instead. The French crowd brought the energy, giving the Spurs their second-largest margin of victory this season in the 140-110 win.
After the game, Wemby mentioned that “the win is on the fans as well.”
Saturday was the complete opposite of Thursday. The Pacers came better prepared and limited the Spurs in their 136-98 victory despite the heavily Spurs-favored crowd.
International Players and the NBA
With the rise of international players in the NBA, Victor Wembanyama’s influence will shape not only the Spurs’ future but the NBA’s as well. Throughout the years, many international players have increased viewership in the NBA, most notably Yao Ming and Dirk Nowitzki.
Many of the top players in the NBA today are European players, such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, and Luka Doncic. All of these players have influenced their country through their success in the NBA. Giannis is why the Bucks are a global brand, and Wemby can do the same with the Spurs.
Coming into the league, Wemby already had fans from France, and joining the Spurs brought much of their attention to the NBA along with new fans.
Social Media and Sales
Over 75% of the NBA’s social media followers are not from the United States.
The NBA had an increase of 22% from last year with 26 billion views across their social platforms. There are many international stars in the league, but a big reason for the boost is because of Wemby.
In just last week alone, he has generated more than 108 million views.
This season, Wemby is also number five in the NBA in jersey sales, putting the Spurs top 10 in merchandise sales. The last time the Spurs had a player in the top 10 for jersey sales was Kawhi Leonard in the 2016-17 season. Being from France gives Wemby a different demographic of fans that only a few other NBA players can say they have.
What the Victor Wembanyama Influence means
Since Victor Wembanyama entered the league, the Spurs and the NBA have gained more fans. As a big star from France, Wemby is paving the way for the future of other French and international athletes.
With players such as Wembanyama having such a big influence on international fans, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver discussed the possibility of an NBA Europe league. While there are currently no agreements in place, the NBA has met with the EuroLeague and FIBA.
Recently, Wemby announced that he plans to play for France in the EuroBasket 2025 later in the year. This gives him another place to showcase his talent and play for his country.
By doing this, Wemby can attract more fans through his talent and commitment to France.
