VJ Edgecombe is one of the most athletic guards in the 2025 NBA Draft class.
As of Mar. 5, the Baylor shooting guard is averaging 14.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
Strengths
Edgecombe’s game starts and ends with athleticism.
His speed and jumping ability help him quickly interfere with passing lanes to steal the ball from opposing offenses and create transition opportunities. He is also quick enough laterally to keep up with great ball handlers.
Offensively, his elite first step helps him blow by defenders and get to the rim, where he can finish very well. Defenders will do whatever they can to prevent VJ from getting to the rack, but keeping up with someone who can accelerate and decelerate so well is a tall task.
This allows him to create shots for himself or open looks for his teammates. After all, he is a three-level scorer, making him a scary threat for any defense. His passing ability is not elite, yet he is a willing passer, averaging more assists than many of the other top shooting guards in his draft class.
Weaknesses
While VJ is an excellent player who could be a top-five pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, he has some weaknesses physically and in his game. He is only 6-foot-3 barefoot with a 6-foot-6 wingspan, which makes him slightly undersized as an NBA two-guard.
He also is inconsistent at times. While playing for Long Island Lutheran High School, for example, Montverde Academy successfully limited his scoring. So far at Baylor, there have been five games where VJ scored in the single digits (including three of his last six games). Baylor is 2-3 in those games, but is 18-12 overall.
VJ’s shooting could use some work, but it is nowhere near a hindrance. If one were to be nit-picky, his weak hand abilities could be improved, as he sometimes encounters awkward finishes because he prefers to use his strong hand.
The Good News
VJ Edgecombe has weaknesses, as does every basketball player on planet Earth.
But many of these weaknesses can be fixed. Many players suffer from inconsistency when they are younger, and work on that as their college and pro years go by.
In addition, VJ may still grow an inch or two. However, he is a fundamentally sound player. He can do whatever is asked of him at a decent level, at a minimum. He plays a lot like Jalen Green, relying on his athleticism but still being well-rounded otherwise.
As a two-way player who is already as good as he is, VJ Edgecombe has the potential to become an NBA star one day.
