The NBA has tried three formats for the All-Star Game: East vs. West, Team Captains, and Team Captains with a target score.
This year, four teams were involved.
It didn’t receive the highest praise. Fans did not like the format, and some players like Tyler Herro, Trae Young, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said they didn’t like the format or all the stoppages in the game.
However, NBA legends Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant actually enjoyed it.
East vs. West Era
The traditional East vs. West game was simple and easy for fans to follow. Each conference selected 12 players, making the rosters balanced and easy to understand. Additionally, this format had a sense of tradition and nostalgia, which many fans and players want to see return today.
As far as the negatives, it became a real issue in the late 2010s:
- It was a low-intensity game and the West usually won.
- From 2008-2017, the West won seven of the ten games.
- In 2017, the score was 192-182.
Fans and former players voiced their frustrations after that All-Star Game. Therefore, in 2018, when the format was changed, the game was very competitive, and the final score was 148-145.
Team Captain Era
At first, the Team Captain format seemed like the perfect solution. The unpredictability of team selections, early competitive energy, and built-in storylines between players added intrigue to the weekend.

However, as the years went on, the intensity gradually faded. By 2022, the All-Star Game had again become a talking point for the same reasons five years prior.
With the unpredictability of captains and teams, the competitive energy in the beginning years, and the storylines that transpired, the team captain format showed it could work long term. However, the negatives come from the slowdown of competitive energy and predictability with the winner. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the solution to the ongoing problem the All-Star game has.
What’s Next?
The NBA attempted a four-team format in the 2025 All-Star Game. For new viewers, this format can be extremely confusing to understand. The target score is extremely low for a game with the NBA’s best talent. Also, it relies too much on players buying into the new format. Even worse, there’s a lot of negative feedback from most fans and players.
Recent talks have included returning the All-Star Game to the traditional East vs. West with an incentive or USA vs. World. With the NBA actively trying to solve its All-Star game problem, a decision is looming.
