Welcome to the “Watchability stakes” – a ranking of the weekly matchups ahead in the NFL. Games are tiered based on three factors: narrative, implications and general intrigue. You will be seeing The Lead’s NFL game watchability rankings at the start of the week to get you ready for football action.

All 32 teams return to the field this week for the first time in a bit. In the context of this wild season, it couldn’t come at a better time.

The 2024 season reaches a point where fans can sense everyone’s general direction. Some clear tiers have formed between the league’s best and worst. At this point, Week 8 marks when the playoff race starts to take shape with teams getting into the thick of their divisional and conference games, all sprinkled with matchups against opponents who have over- or under-performed relative to consensus preseason expectations.

The full league back in action means every team will be fully represented in this week’s “Watchability stakes.” With 16 total games to break down, here are your watchability stakes for Week 8 of the NFL season:

Tier 1: Absolutely can’t miss

Dallas Cowboys (3-3) versus San Francisco 49ers (3-4) – Sunday @ 8:20 pm EST

  • Purely based on record, this game ranks more as Tier 2 or Tier 3 in a best-case scenario. Yet, considering where both teams sit amid their respective underwhelming starts, each team needs this one. Dallas versus San Francisco being on Sunday night elevates this to the top game of the week, in addition to all the big-picture implications.

Philadelphia Eagles (4-2) versus Cincinnati Bengals (3-4) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST

  • Arguably the best game on Sunday out of all the matchups in the early-afternoon window. Likewise, both teams desperately need this one to stay more in the middle of the playoff mix and less on the bubble. After two months of rollercoaster-like play, this could be the game to build confidence fully.

Atlanta Falcons (4-3) versus Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-3) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST

  • The NFC South (sans Carolina) remains one of the most chaotic divisions in the league this year. Every divisional game counts and Tampa Bay will look for redemption after a tough loss to Baltimore. Up next: a pretty deep Atlanta squad.

Tier 2: This could be fun

Buffalo Bills (5-2) versus Seattle Seahawks (4-3) – Sunday @ 4:05 pm EST

  • Has a case to be in Tier 1. This is without a doubt the best game in the late-afternoon window. Buffalo and Seattle each picked up wins last week and will again look to build some cushion compared to the rest of their respective conferences.

Indianapolis Colts (4-3) versus Houston Texans (5-2) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST

  • Another critical divisional matchup where standings and tiebreaker scenarios are in play when it comes to the postseason conversation. Houston could easily see its division lead disappear if Indiana can win this key road matchup.

Chicago Bears (4-2) versus Washington Commanders (5-2) – Sunday @ 4:25 pm EST

  • A young QB matchup could be taken away should Washington not hear any improved news about their franchise guy. Even then, two rising teams off to surprising starts both look to keep the momentum going.

Tier 3: Decent floor, high upside

Minnesota Vikings (5-1) versus Los Angeles Rams (2-4) – Thursday @ 8:15 pm EST

  • Minnesota’s unbeaten record is no longer, and up next is one of the most polarizing teams in the entire NFC. With that said, the Rams have proven to be resilient and won’t go down easily. This isn’t the worst Thursday night game of the year, bumping this up to the top of Tier 3.

Baltimore Ravens (5-2) versus Cleveland Browns (1-6) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST

  • Baltimore should enter as the clear favorite, but Cleveland remains a tough road environment.

Green Bay Packers (5-2) versus Jacksonville Jaguars (2-5) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST

  • Two wins in a row for Jacksonville means their season isn’t over quite yet. An upset win over one of the best teams in the NFC could change the Jaguars’ season around completely.

New Orleans Saints (2-5) versus Los Angeles Chargers (3-3) – Sunday @ 4:05 pm EST

  • Both teams can play at the level of a bubble playoff team, but injuries predominantly made the journey to get here tough. One of the bigger toss-up games all week.

Kansas City Chiefs (6-0) versus Las Vegas Raiders (2-5) – Sunday @ 4:25 pm EST

  • Kansas City remains the only undefeated team left. Could the Raiders play spoiler during the late afternoon on Sunday? It’s a possible outcome.

Tier 4: It could always be worse

Arizona Cardinals (3-4) versus Miami Dolphins (2-4) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST

  • Both teams have looked bad at times, but much better at other points. This gets buried behind a loaded 1 p.m. window of games, but each team has something to play for with the playoff bubble consisting of a very large number of teams.

New York Jets (2-5) versus New England Patriots (1-6) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST

  • Only elevates to Tier 4 because X will have a complete meltdown if the Jets lose this one.

Tier 5: Snooze Fest

New York Giants (2-5) versus Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) – Monday @ 8:15 pm EST

  • Both offenses at times leave a lot to be desired. For once, this game gets dropped to Tier 5 despite being the lone game on Monday night. It’s one of the worst MNF games all year.

Carolina Panthers (1-6) versus Denver Broncos (4-3) – Sunday @ 4:25 pm EST

Should Denver win, the Broncos will see themselves go higher than this Tier for the foreseeable future. It’s hard to find much upside in watchability playing the Panthers.

Tennessee Titans (1-5) versus Detroit Lions (5-1) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST

  • Detroit shouldn’t have much of a problem playing Tennessee at home. Of all the 1 p.m. games, spend the least time on this one.
